Classes and Studio

Over the years I've been asked about teaching encaustic and just recently have been able to convert my studio into both a working and teaching space. In the last few years I have studied different techniques and applications for encaustic, taken a weeklong workshop devoted to training encaustic teachers at R&F Handmade Paints, (a manufacturer of encaustic mediums and materials) as well as attended the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, Massachusetts. I can now invite all who are curious, adventurous, and who just want to play to join me in this next adventure!

I will be teaching an introductory class called 'just the beginning...', some specialty classes in different applications of using encaustic including collage, working with photographs (including photo transfers),  working transparently without a substrate and any suggestions you may have to explore this fascinating medium. I will also be having 'open studio' time. This is scheduled days when you can come by and use the studio and equipment to 'play' some more with the medium. The classes will take place on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and open studio will be the next day on Sunday from noon to 4pm. The classe and open studio time will be limited to six people and the fee will include instruction, use of equipment, wax, pigments and panels to work on. A minimum of two people must enroll in order for the class to take place. You will receive advance notice of class cancellation.

All classes will take place in Studio #224 in the Mill Centre building the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, MD. The official address is 3000 Chestnut Ave but parking and the building entrance is on the corner of Mill Road and Darby Street.

Class Descriptions

...just the beginning

in "just the beginning" you will learn the basics of this intriguing medium and see samples of some of the creative applications that are being used by contemporary encaustic artists today.  We will start with the technical, safety, and aesthetic aspects of working with wax and then get a hands-on feeling for melting, manipulating and fusing the wax on your own board. We will cover some of the many ways to make 'marks', shapes, lines and texture while leaving plenty of time for exploring on your own.

Fee for class is 65.00

Fee for class and open studio time is 100.00

encaustic and collage

In this 'specialty' class we will go beyond the basics and delve into the field of collage. Encaustic is especially suited to collage because the wax acts both as a adhesive and as a sealant.  We will explore the adhesive requirements of various objects from paper and fabric to shells, metals, wood and memorabilia We will also play with the dimensionality of collage by exploring the space, including the depth between objects that is unique to working with wax.

open studio time

The open studio time will take place on the Sunday afternoons after the regular classes. These hours are open to anyone who wishes to continue working with the medium and playing with the techniques learned in class. This time is open to anyone who has basic knowledge of encaustics and would like to use the studio resources to work on a specific project or complete a work in progress...in other words 'playtime', 'get-advise-time', 'share-with-other-encaustic-folks-time'!

The fee for 'open studio' is 40.00 for a 4 hour session. If you sign up for a class and open studio time the fee is 100.00 for both - a savings of 5.00.
